The first round of Toyota recalls involve misshapen floor mats that interfere with the gas pedal, causing it to become stuck in the open throttle position while the vehicle is in operation. The recall was prompted by an incident in Santee, California, in which a California Highway Patrol officer and three others were killed when the accelerator pedal became stuck under the floor mat, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle and crash.
Toyota is offering to replace the misshapen floor mats on all models with genuine Toyota all-weather floor mats, as well as add a brake override system on certain Camry and Lexus models, as a remedy for the problem.
